Public access to buildings

          Chiang Mai University is an institution of higher education focused on providing knowledge, promoting research, and offering academic services to society and communities across a diverse range of disciplines and fields to students at various levels. Moreover, Chiang Mai University also features museums and related learning resources that are open to the public and tourists, providing opportunities for study, knowledge seeking, finding inspiration, and serving as a place for leisure and relaxation.

 

Chiang Mai University History Development Hall

          In the year 1989, Chiang Mai University had a policy to promote the university to be the center of Lanna arts and culture. As well as participating in the activities of local arts and culture. By creating an art gallery to be a museum and a source of cultural knowledge for faculty members, government officials, students, and the general public.

          The university renovated the former Student Union building into an art gallery and named it the Pin Mala Art Gallery. The university then requested Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to graciously preside over the official opening ceremony of the Pin Mala Art Gallery on Monday, February 25, 1991, at 9:00 AM. In the year 2002, Chiang Mai University undertook the renovation of the Pin Mala Art Gallery to establish the Chiang Mai University History Hall (Pin Mala Art Gallery) with the following objectives:

  1. To serve as a center for the collection, conservation, and archiving of data, images, and all types of artifacts related to the history and prestige of Chiang Mai University.
  2. To host permanent and rotating exhibitions concerning Chiang Mai University, covering everything from the campaign for its establishment to its subsequent development and achievements in various fields.
  3. To provide services for educational research and study regarding the university.

          Currently, the University has renovated the “Pin Mala Art Gallery” to serve as a center for collecting, conserving, and archiving data, images, and artifacts related to the history and prestige of Chiang Mai University, as well as hosting related exhibitions.

Chiang Mai University Art and Culture Center

          Chiang Mai University Art and Culture Center was established in 1998 and is managed by the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University. It is a venue for the rotating exhibition of various art forms across different periods, including paintings, photography, sculptures, films, performance art, and art and local-themed discussions. It also provides academic services to the community and serves as a space for exhibiting the works of students from the Faculty of Fine Arts. Exhibitions held in the main exhibition area are free of charge. Notable activities hosted include the FOFA CMU Thesis Exhibition and the Japanese Film Festival.

Veterinary Anatomy Pathology Museum

          Veterinary Anatomy Pathology Museum, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chiang Mai University, exhibits specimens illustrating normal anatomical structures and abnormal pathological structures of various animal species. The exhibits include skeletal structures, preserved organs, and taxidermied animals. The museum is continuously undergoing improvements to enhance the completeness of its displays and has organized activities to promote learning for students, scholars, and the general public. It is sincerely hoped that this museum will continue to be a learning resource in veterinary anatomy and pathology for society, aligning with a part of Chiang Mai University’s commitment, which states:

          “To be a source for collecting, researching, inventing, and transmitting knowledge based on the principle of academic freedom, adhering to truth and virtue for academic excellence.”

          In 2023, the Museum of Veterinary Anatomy and Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chiang Mai University, was honored with the “Thai Museum Excellence Award 2023” in the “Outstanding” category from the Thai Museum Association, recognizing it as a “Thai Museum and Learning Center for Sustainable Development: Museum and Learning Center & SDGs17” during the ceremony for the presentation of the Distinguished Thai Museums and Learning Centers Awards 2023.

Geology Museum

          The Geology Museum is located within the Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University. The Department of Geological Sciences established the museum in 1973 for use in teaching and learning. It features approximately 10 display cases and 6 display shelves, showcasing examples of minerals and rocks such as blue opal and gypsum, as well as fossils including turtle shells, elephant jaws, bivalves, gastropods, and petrified wood. Additionally, the museum hosts exhibitions providing knowledge on geology in Thailand and dinosaurs.

Museum-Biology-CMU

The Museum of Biological Science, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University, was established around 1979 to support the teaching and learning of the department. The exhibition area is located on the ground floor of the Biology Building. The display cases are designed to showcase approximately four displays of preserved organisms, along with about seven original cases and six display pedestals. The samples on display include pickled specimens, animal skeletons, taxidermied animals, and insects, as well as exhibits on the classification of flora and fauna, the evolution of life, and more.

His Majesty the King’s 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary Building

  His Majesty the King’s 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary Building Chiang Mai University had this building constructed to celebrate His Majesty the King’s 84th birthday on December 5, 2011 to mark the auspicious occasion and to honor His Majesty. The university intended that the building would become the center for information related to King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The exhibition hall displays some of His Majesty’s ingenious works among many of the practical innovations he has initiated for the benefit of his people. His majesty has devoted himself almost entirely to his numerous development projects, evidence of his keen interest in the welfare of the Thai people. His gracious kindness has been extended to Chiang Mai University in many forms since the time he came to declare the opening of Chiang Mai University in 1965 until it has advanced to its present state. Ultimately, the university aims for all the buildings to be concrete evidence and centers of loyalty that all members of Chiang Mai University have for His Majesty.

The Lanna Traditional House Museum

          A lush green area spanning approximately 9 rai, adjacent to the Chiang Mai University Art and Culture Center, is a museum that showcases ancient Lanna-style houses and traditional dwellings. Each house is an authentic structure, which was relocated, disassembled, and then reconstructed on site, meticulously renovated with components that aim to preserve the original integrity as much as possible. The museum features 10 Lanna houses and 4 rice granaries. It also includes a Digital Mapping exhibition room located inside a colonial-style house (Cure Pal) and offers workshop activities for group visits.

          During the period of December 9 – 15, 2024, the Lanna Traditional House Museum hosted the Creative Lanna Festival 2024 to present the diverse Lanna culture, traditions, and way of life through various forms of presentation. The event incorporated various technologies into the presentations to showcase the blend of modern technology and knowledge with the exhibition of the traditional Lanna lifestyle.

 

The Lanna Traditional House Museum is open to the public free of charges for student under 21 years old, alumni of Chiang Mai University, educational personnel (or Academic staff and University employees), Buddhist monks, novices, nuns, and religious devotees of all faiths, persons with disabilities, and seniors aged 60 and over. For tourists and the general public, the admission fee is 3.1 US Dollar.

Lanna Architecture Center Khum Chao Burirat (Maha Intra)

          Lanna Architecture Center Khum Chao Burirat (Maha Intra) is located in the heart of Chiang Mai’s inner moat area (Khu Muang). The building is approximately 130–140 years old. It originally belonged to Chao Burirattana (Noi Mahain) and was passed down through generations until 2001 (B.E. 2544), when the Faculty of Architecture received it as a donation from the latest owner. The purpose was for the faculty to use the space to disseminate knowledge regarding Lanna architecture. The Chao Burirattana Mansion features a blend of Lanna architecture and Western influence in Chiang Mai (Colonial style) from the late reign of King Rama V. The building has undergone continuous restoration. The ground floor hosts rotating exhibitions for displaying various works and organizing discussion events. The second floor contains bedrooms and exhibits of period-specific household items and a colonial-style balcony.

 

Children under 7 years old, Buddhist monks, novices, and persons with disabilities are admitted free of charge.

Doi Suthep Nature Center, Chiang Mai University

          The Doi Suthep Nature Center is the learning center of the Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University. The goal of this center is to promote environmental friendly way of life and to connect people to beautiful nature. It serves as a learning resource in natural history, ecology, nature, and the environment through exhibitions, activities/projects, and various academic service training programs offered to target groups, including children, youth, families, and the general public.  There is an exhibit and projects about the biodiversity of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Chiang Mai, Thailand. This place also offers to be a coordination center and knowledge center that provide information about Doi Suthep.

          The activities organized by the center focus on promoting awareness and building consciousness for preserving the forest ecosystem, such as trekking activities. It also offers educational courses on the ecosystem of Doi Suthep, such as “Doi Suthep Studies” (Doi Suthep Witthaya), which can be taken online through CMU Lifelong Education.

 

The admission fee for the exhibition at the Doi Suthep Nature Center, Chiang Mai University, is 0.6 US Dollar.
