Lifelong Education
University Commitment to Quality Education and Lifelong Learning Access
Chiang Mai University’s Lifelong Learning Access Policy, officially approved by the University Council in March 2023 and updated in January 2024, establishes comprehensive free educational resources for community members regardless of their enrollment status. This quality education initiative advances inclusive education by removing financial and accessibility barriers to learning opportunities for all individuals in Northern Thailand and beyond. The policy ensures that education access extends beyond traditional student populations to serve working professionals, elderly citizens, persons with disabilities, immigrants, and underserved communities throughout the region.
Chiang Mai University’s commitment to lifelong learning aligns with the university’s vision as “a leading university that is socially responsible for sustainable development through innovation.” In the era of globalization and rapidly changing technology, continuous learning is not merely a concept but a necessity in today’s world where knowledge constantly evolves. CMU understands this importance and has developed comprehensive curricula establishing the “CMU School of Lifelong Education” to support lifelong learning for all.
The CMU School of Lifelong Education, established in 2018 under the Office of Academic Affairs, coordinates all lifelong learning programs through two primary digital platforms: the CMU Lifelong Education Platform (www.lifelong.cmu.ac.th) and CMU MOOC (mooc.cmu.ac.th). Both platforms are also integrated with the national Thai MOOC system managed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, expanding access to learners nationwide.
Free Courses with Certificates and Awards
Chiang Mai University offers free certificate programs through the CMU MOOC platform as of October 2024, accessible to all community members without enrollment fees. These courses span multiple disciplines including health sciences, digital technology, agriculture, business management, education, and sustainable development.
All courses are delivered through the self-paced online learning management system, allowing learners to study according to their own schedules. Course materials include video lectures, interactive exercises, downloadable resources, discussion forums, and automated assessments. Registration is completely free at: https://mooc.cmu.ac.th and https://lifelong.cmu.ac.th
Featured Free Certificate Programs
Chiang Mai University offers four main categories of lifelong learning programs serving diverse age groups and educational needs:
1. Upskill/Reskill Programs (Short-term Training Courses): These are short-duration courses where learners can select programs matching their interests for review or knowledge enhancement. Students and staff receive tuition waivers or reduced fees to ensure accessibility.
2. Advanced@CMU (Co-enrollment Program): This program allows external individuals, high school students, or students from other institutions to enroll in courses alongside CMU students at both undergraduate and graduate levels in a Non-Degree format. Credits earned can be stored and transferred when participants later enroll as full-time CMU students, creating pathways for continuous education and reducing barriers to higher education access.
3. MEDEE (Multi-generation Entrepreneur Development Educational Ecosystem): Part of the “Ageing Generation Propelling Nationg” project, this program creates an educational ecosystem specifically for lifelong learning among elderly populations. Courses focus on:
- Essential knowledge and tools for modern living
- Technology adoption for daily life management
- Protection against online fraud and scams
- Building digital literacy and cyber resilience
- Health and wellness management for active aging
- Skill4Life (Essential Work Skills) : Courses focusing on four critical skill dimensions necessary for professional success: Cognitive skills, collaborative skills, leadership skills, and digital skills.
CMU MOOC
CMU MOOC (Chiang Mai University Massive Open Online Course) is the university’s flagship online learning platform providing open-access courses across diverse academic disciplines at no cost to learners. As an integral component of lifelong learning support, CMU MOOC develops essential skills required for current and future professional environments. The primary objective of CMU MOOC is to democratize access to quality higher education, enabling the general public, students, and university staff to access high-quality curricula without attending traditional classroom settings.
Thai MOOC National Platform Partnership
