Bridging Sectors for Sustainable Development: CMU’s Leadership in SDG Dialogue

Chiang Mai University (CMU) has emerged as a catalyst for sustainable development through its strategic facilitation of cross-sectoral  dialogue, embodying the collaborative spirit of SDG 17. By creating platforms where government, academia, civil society, and private sector representatives converge to address global challenges, CMU demonstrates how higher education institutions can accelerate progress toward the 2030 Agenda.

Fostering Climate Action Through Multistakeholder Engagement

In August 2024, CMU’s Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development orchestrated a groundbreaking workshop on “Creative and Just Environment and Climate Change Engagement” in Vientiane, Laos. This collaborative initiative, developed in partnership with the National University of Laos, exemplified effective triangular cooperation by bringing together diverse stakeholders from seven Asian nations.
The five-day workshop served as a model for knowledge sharing between sectors, with participants including university lecturers, researchers, NGO practitioners, artists, writers, and media professionals. Through structured discussions on climate justice and environmental governance, CMU facilitated South-South cooperation while strengthening statistical capacity for monitoring environmental change. This interdisciplinary approach to sustainable development has established new pathways for policy coherence across borders.

Innovative Public-Academic Partnerships for Health Systems

CMU has further demonstrated its commitment to cross-sectoral dialogue through a landmark agreement with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health signed in August 2025. This partnership for connecting public health service information represents a significant advancement in data collection and technology transfer between governmental and academic institutions.
By establishing formal mechanisms for health data sharing, CMU has created a framework for enhanced development cooperation that leverages technological innovation to address public health challenges. This collaboration illustrates how universities can serve as bridges between public institutions and other sectors, mobilizing expertise and resources toward shared sustainable development goals.

Integrating SDGs Through Multi-Level Stakeholder Dialogue

CMU’s approach to sustainable development is further reflected in its strategic integration of multiple SDGs, including clean energy initiatives (SDG 7), sustainable urban development projects (SDG 11), and climate action programs (SDG 13). These efforts are anchored in CMU’s participation in international aid effectiveness dialogues that bring together domestic and global partners.
The university has institutionalized cross-sectoral engagement through regular consultative forums where representatives from government ministries, regional NGOs, community organizations, and industry partners collaborate on SDG implementation strategies. These multistakeholder partnerships have strengthened global governance for sustainable development while enhancing capacity building in the region.

Advancing the 2030 Agenda Through Collaborative Platforms

As a regional hub for sustainable development dialogue, CMU continues to cultivate global partnerships that transcend traditional  boundaries between sectors. By creating inclusive spaces for knowledge exchange and collaborative problem-solving, the university demonstrates how higher education institutions can effectively unite diverse stakeholders around the common goals of the 2030 Agenda.
Through these strategic cross-sectoral dialogues, CMU is not only advancing implementation of the SDGs locally but is contributing to broader international cooperation frameworks that will ultimately determine the success of our collective sustainable development efforts.
