Scholarship Programs to Support and Increase Educational Opportunities for Students from Low-Income Families

Chiang Mai University provides comprehensive scholarship programs targeting students experiencing poverty and economic vulnerability. These initiatives aim to reduce income inequality by expanding access to higher education for vulnerable populations living below the poverty line.

  • Preparation Scholarship for New CMU Students

The CMU Promotion Committee collaborates to provide financial assistance for students admitted through the 17 Northern Provinces quota system who face extreme poverty. This anti-poverty program offers 10,000 baht per student to cover essential expenses including transportation, clothing, and educational materials during the first semester. In academic year 2023, the university awarded 121 scholarships totaling 1,210,000 baht, expanding to 160 scholarships in 2024, demonstrating commitment to poverty alleviation and social protection for economically disadvantaged youth.

  • Chiang Mai University Scholarships

These scholarships address economic resources gaps through budget allocations and donations from individuals, companies, foundations, and organizations. Designed for students lacking adequate financial resources while maintaining good conduct, the program offers 600-1,000 scholarships annually. Applications for first-year students open during registration periods, with results announced mid-first semester. Continuing students can apply during the second semester. • Comprehensive Support for Students in Extreme Poverty

This scholarship specifically targets students from families with income below established thresholds, ensuring equal opportunity for quality education. The program covers tuition fees, university dormitory accommodation, and monthly living expenses as determined by the university, creating pathways out of poverty for youth from poor households.

  • Faculty-Based Scholarships

Individual faculties offer additional scholarships based on specific criteria, supporting students’ economic well-being through decentralized financial assistance programs accessible via faculty student development offices.

  • Student Loan Fund

The Student Loan Fund offers two types of loans: general loans for students lacking financial resources, and specialized loans for students in priority fields essential for national development. These loans cover tuition and living expenses, with repayment beginning after graduation, providing crucial social safety nets for students experiencing economic vulnerability.

  • Work-Study Programs

CMU provides employment opportunities for students during non-class hours, helping reduce economic burden while building work experience. The program pays 50 baht per hour, supporting livelihood needs and financial inclusion.
